Who We Are

(E)ST(E)EM is a collection of curious, diligent, and motivated individuals in the Townsend Harris community. Through a shared initiative, we seek to contribute towards the burgeoning technological future and to empower women into the STEM field. We meet Fridays after school in room 414 to develop literacy in various programming languages (Python, Java, HTML, C/C++), discuss and explore the latest technologies, share internships and mentorship opportunities, and execute short-term and long-term projects. At the end of the day, (E)ST(E)EM is a group with intrepid determination that seeks to mould the future.

Women in STEM

Closing the Gender Gap

The gender disparity in STEM fields is manifest of how STEM is stereotypically assigned masculinity. According to the National Girls Collaborative Project, “Women make up half of the total U.S. college-educated workforce, but only 29% of the science and engineering workforce." It's vitally important that both genders have equal representation in these fields and that toxic gender associations be eliminated. STEM education is an enabler that allows women to mature the confidence, expertise, and knowledge to pursue their many aspirations.
